A police officer shot and wounded a man in Kentucky for refusing to show a hand that he was holding behind his back as he approached officers.
Trooper Shane Jacobs identified the suspect as 29-year-old Brandon Moses of Bledsoe, Kentucky, according to a release from the Kentucky State Police on Sunday, July 23, as CBS News reported.
After Moses was shot, he was listed in serious condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
In the incident, police in Barboursville, located 100 miles south of Lexington, pursued Moses’s vehicle in a high-speed chase, WTVQ reported. He eventually pulled into a Rite Aid parking lot before he got out of the vehicle and grabbed a bystander. Then, he let the person go and approached officers with one hand behind his back.
Moses allegedly threatened to kill officers, CBS News reported.
When officers commanded him to show his hand, he didn’t respond.
Officer Adam Townsley then shot him, wounding him.
Jacobs, in the statement, said that both Moses and Townsley are white.
The department said that the three officers responding to the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is a routine procedure after a shooting.
None of the officers were hurt. The Kentucky State Police is investigating the incident.
