Unfortunately Kenny was unable to overcome his opponent Zhang Xiaoping and all the other obstacles that came his way, the final score was 11 points to 7.

Going into the final round Kenny Egan only trailed 7 points to 5 but he was unable to overturn the difference.

Gracious in defeat Kenny Egan acknowledged Zhang’s performance,"[Zhang] boxed well himself, he had a hard draw himself. He done well and beat the Russian and Kazakh, you can’t take it away from him.’

The Irish boxers performed excellently at these games, this time last year Paddy Barnes was the only Irish boxer to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Chicago and now we have three Olympic boxing medals. Two bronze medals one for light-flyweight Paddy Barnes the other for middleweight Darren Sutherland and of course light-heavyweight Kenny Egan’s silver.

Three out of the five Irish boxers who travelled to Beijing won medals. A good return for the effort put in by the Irish boxing team.

Billy Walsh, the Boxing team manager was critical of the funding that Irish fighters have been receiving compared to other sports. “The funding has been very limited and to be honest some of them would be financially better off if they were stacking shelves in a supermarket,” said Walsh.
“It looks like we’re going to be the only Irish medals coming out of Beijing and hopefully that will mean we get a lot more funding in the run-up to London 2012.

Michael Carruth, remains the only Irishman to have won a gold medal for boxing which he won at the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona.
