The city of Compton, California, honored rapper Kendrick Lamar by giving him the key to the city.
Mayor Aja Brown gave Lamar the key, which took place over the weekend, according to TMZ.
“Kendrick Lamar is a phenomenal artist whose work has served as a catalyst to raise a new level of consciousness for this generation,” said Brown in a statement, per the Los Angeles Times.
“His message challenges the status quo and motivates listeners to rethink our society’s institutions.”
A few months ago, Lamar wrote a letter to Compton in his video “King Kunta,” where he is seen dancing in his hometown. Brown said the key to the city is a response to the video.
“Kendrick Lamar is one of Compton’s greatest ambassadors,” said City Councilwoman Janna Zurita.
“We in Compton are proud of him because he is a symbol of what our city really is — a place where dreams can come true.”
