The two matches in Round 4 of the Karp Group Sunday Championship League on Oct 7 saw Headwin Sri Lankans Cricket Club (SLCC) play Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC) Templars at PKVR Sports Ground and Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) Wanderers play HKCC Scorpions at the HKCC Ground. Both matches were played in hot, sunny conditions.

The match at the HKCC Ground was closely fought, with the HKCC Wanderers batting first and scoring 183 for eight off 44 overs, and the HKCC Scorpions were all out for 179 runs in 36.3 overs. In the Wanderer’s innings, TL Smithson scored 56 before being caught by CA Bright off the bowling of R Masood. Wickets were shared between VC Creigh, R Masood and PJ Holmwood, with two wickets each. PJ Holmwood took two for 15 in two overs.

For the Scorpions, CA Bright scored a fine half century before falling to a catch by WM Jones off the bowling of LM Ginnivan. Extras were the next highest scorer at 47, with MI Idress and AJ Nicholls chalking up 15 wides each. MI Idress and WM Jones each took four wickets.

SLCC and KCC Templars played on the artificial turf at the PKVR Sports Ground, Po Kong Village Road. The ground is large, looks superb and although not traditional turf, seems ideal for cricket. The Templars batted first and amassed a huge total of 307 for eight wickets in their 50 overs. A solid opening partnership between HR Katri (39) and KCC’s captain JP Lamsam (84) set the tone of the innings. Lamsam then combined with ex-Hong Kong batsman R Campbell, putting further pressure on the home team. Campbell played a superb innings of 112 before being caught by BW Perera off the bowling of U Khan. SH Walpola took three wickets for 46 runs and CJ Dissanayake and S Sarwar collected two wickets each.

SLCC missed a couple of important catches mid-way through the morning session that could have changed the course of the match.

In reply, SLCC could only score 181 for nine wickets in 49 overs. There were two good batting performances by wicketkeeper BW Perera (57) and PK Perera (47). W Darwood took five wickets for 37 runs and ND Shah took four wickets for 29 runs in their 10 overs.

Interestingly, all wickets in the match were taken with catches except one LBW decision.

Next week: HKCC Optimists host Shaffi’s Vagabonds at the HKCC Ground and KCC Infidels host LSW Knights at Kowloon Cricket Club on Sunday Oct 14.
