Karla Alvarez, a Mexican television star, was found dead of respiratory failure this week. She was 41.

According to Televisa, she was found dead inside her apartment in Mexico City. Variety reported that she suffered respiratory failure but was rumored to have struggled with alcoholism and an eating disorder.

There were also unconfirmed reports that she had cancer of some kind.

Gustavo Adolfo Infante, a Mexican journalist, confirmed her death via Twitter. “Unfortunately I confirm that passing of actress Karla Álvarez at the age of 41. May she rest in peace,” he said, according to the Latin Times.

She appeared in the telenovella “Que Bonito Amor” this year, known for playing villains. But it was reported that she was being phased out of the show due to personal issues that were affecting her work.

She gained fame for her role in “Maria Mercedes” in the mid-1990s before she appeared in “Buscando El Paraiso,” “Acapulco, Cuerpo y Alma,” and “Mi Querida Isabel.”

Alvarez was married to Alexis Ayala, a Mexican actor.

She was also reportedly involved in a carjacking last month.

There was an outpouring of condolences for her on Twitter.

Carlos de la Mota tweeted: “Surprised and saddened by the death of (Alvarez),” while comic Adrian Uribe added: “Surprised with the death (of Alvarez), may she rest in peace.”
