All seven of the now grown-up Von Trapp children, Kym Karath (Gretl), Debbie Turner (Marta), Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Duane Chase (Kurt), Heather Menzies (Louisa), Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), and Charmian Carr (Liesl), joined Winfrey, along with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, who played the children’s father, Captain von Trapp.

Amusingly, the reunion kicked off with the loud blowing of a whistle, just as the stern von Trapp used to summon his children in the 1965 musical.

Andrews, 75, who played the nun-turned-governess Maria, said: “It made my career. It was that big of a movie. We had no idea, really, at the beginning, that it was going to be that huge.”

She remembered trying to sing “The Hills Are Alive” while nearly being knocked over by the helicopter filming her on the the mountain. Then she recalled another time she fell backwards into the lake whilst trying to catch young Karath who could not swim.

The classic musical has won five Oscars, two Golden Globes and many other awards during its 45 year history.
