Josh Elliott, a CBS News reporter, was fired after making an error while on the air.
Elliott, a regular anchor on CBS’s streaming service, CBSN, told viewers live on the air that he would be leaving to join CBS News for its television broadcasting endeavors, which apparently caught executives at the network off-guard.
“Knowing how things work around here, I may see you again on Monday morning,” he said.
CBS network executives hastily sent out a statement saying he'd be reporting on stories across the network, which includes CBS News.
But that ultimately didn’t pan out.
This week, CBS later confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter he’s no longer with the network.
“CBS News and Josh Elliott are parting ways. Josh will no longer be reporting for CBS News. We are grateful for his contributions over the last year. And we wish him the very best in his future endeavors,” CBS said.
The New York Post’s Page Six, citing sources close to the network, reported that his announcement was premature, and executives didn’t know he was quitting his job on CBSN to join CBS News.
“This is a mess of epic proportions,” a CBS source told the Post. “Nobody at the top at CBS News knew that Josh was going to do that.”
On Monday morning, Elliot reportedly met with CBS network executives, got fired, and he was then escorted out of the building—accompanied by security, the paper reported.
Elliot previously worked at ABC and NBC before moving to CBS. He has yet to comment on the firing.
