The death of JoJo Nicolas this week has left the University of Miami mourning.

Nicolas, 24, was a student at the school from 2007 through 2011 and also played for the football team.

He went on to play for the New York Giants in 2012.

“The University of Miami community suffered a deep loss with the passing of JoJo Nicolas,” Miami head coach Al Golden said in a statement. “For all of us who were fortunate to know JoJo -- to coach him, teach him, play alongside him or simply befriend him -- we will forever carry his memory with us. Our prayers go out to his family and his loved ones and he will always be a cherished member of our family.”

Nicolas was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Family members thanked people for support.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support, community efforts, love and prayers all across the nation, ’’ brother Abner Davis said, reported the Miami Herald. “We lost the life of a brother, a son, a grandson and an athlete of the University of Miami.”

Many people mourned the loss through posts on social media websites.
