John Filion and Paul Ainslie, two Toronto Councillors, are looking to suspend Mayor Rob Ford’s term amid allegations over a video that purportedly shows him smoking crack cocaine.
The Globe and Mail reported that the two filed a motion on Tuesday and a suspension will be decided upon in a December meeting.
It would suspend Ford’s power to dismiss or appoint standing committee chairs and his ability to shuffle members of his executive committee.
“It appears that a majority of members of council and a significant number of members of the executive committee have expressed serious concerns about the mayor’s ability to lead the city government at this time,” reads the motion.
Over the weekend, Ford said in a radio address that he will not step down.
Last week, Toronto police said they obtained the video of Ford allegedly smoking crack. The city’s police chief said that he was “disappointed.”
The move comes as Ford on Tuesday admitted to the Toronto Star that “I have smoked crack cocaine.”
Ford stressed that he is not addicted.
“Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine,” Ford told reporters Tuesday, The Associated Press reported. “There have been times when I’ve been in a drunken stupor. That’s why I want to see the tape. I want everyone in the city to see this tape. I don’t even recall there being a tape or video. I want to see the state that I was in.”
