After speculation as to why Joe Manganiello cancelled his appearance at a charity event last week, TMZ is reporting that Manganiello was hospitalized with a serious case of appendicitis.

According to TMZ, the 39-year-old actor “went into the hospital late last week to have his appendix removed, but when doctors went in they were alarmed. We do not conclusively know the nature of the problem, but one source says his appendix burst.”

Manganiello, along with his wife, Sofia Vergara were to appear at the Stuart House Benefit, where they would act as honorary co-chairs for the event. For years Manganiello has been involved with the charity, whose mission is to act as liaison for sexually abused children. Longtime friend of Manganiello, and host of the charity’s event, fashion designer John Varvatos is appreciative of the the“Magic Mike” actor’s contributions.

“Joe’s been a big part of what we’ve done over the years. He’s been a great personal friend. He’s been involved in all of our—the last four or five years—our Stuart House events,” Varvatos told Entertainment Tonight.

He added: “Basically they just couldn’t make it because [Manganiello] is recovering, I don’t know a lot about it other than that he’s had a little bit of a health problem. We wish him the best. We thank him for all his support that he’s given us and, most importantly, to get well soon because he’s such a wonderful guy.”

Manganiello or Vergara have yet to comment on the matter.
