Joseph Kennedy III announced he will run for the Massachusetts congressional seat being vacated by longtime Rep. Barney Frank (D), according to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

“I believe this country was founded on a simple idea: that every person deserves to be treated fairly, by each other and by their government,” Kennedy was quoted as saying, in a Feb. 15 AP report.

Kennedy will run against GOP candidate Sean Bielat.

He is the 31-year-old son of Joe Kennedy II, a former congressman from Massachusetts who served from 1987–1999, and the grandson of former Sen. Robert Kennedy.

Kennedy received a key endorsement from the AFL-CIO union on Tuesday.

He also recently moved from Cambridge to Brookline in Massachusetts to be part of the 4th Congressional District, where he is running, according to The Associated Press.

The current congressional session is the first one in six decades not to have a member of the Kennedy family in Congress or in the Senate.
