Joan Rivers died on Thursday at the age of 81, her daughter Melissa confirmed. But on Twitter, Rivers was panned for comments she made recently about Palestinians.
“Joan rivers died a week after she said ‘All Palestine should die’ ......karma....,” one person wrote on the social media site.
According to reports early in August, Rivers said that Palestinians “deserved to die.” She was asked a question about a recent Israeli offensive in Gaza, and a photographer asked her about the death toll in Gaza, to which she replied: “The dead? You deserve to be dead. You started it. Don’t you dare make me feel sad about that.”
However, she later apologized and said her quotes were taken out of context.
She said, “I am both saddened and disappointed that my statement about the tragedy of civilian casualties was totally taken out of context. What I said and stand behind is, war is hell and unfortunately civilians are victims of political conflicts. We, The United States, certainly know this as 69 years later we still feel the guilt of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”
“The media, as usual, has decided to only quote the most out of context and inflammatory non sequitur rather than giving an accurate account of what my intentions were behind the statement. Along with every other sane person in this world, I am praying for peace. It is stupid and wrong and I am tired of bearing the brunt of attacks by people who want to sell newspapers or gain ratings by creating a scandal about me that is non-existent.”
But some people on Twitter apparently didn’t let her slide for that. “I hope Joan Rivers rests in peace but her rant about Palestine still remains unforgivable,” said one person Thursday.
Added another: “Joan Rivers’ attitude towards the Gaza & Palestine situation has made me ‘cold shoulder’ her death #sorrynotsorry.”
“It’s sad that #JoanRivers died believing the people of #Palestine deserved to die. Anyone who believes someone deserves to die is wrong,” another said.
