Oscar Nominees Announced

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year’s Academy Award nominations on Tuesday. The contender’s for best picture are: “Avatar,” “The Blind Side,” “District 9,” “An Education,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” “A Serious Man,” “Up,” and “Up in the Air.” Vying for the Best Actress Oscar are: Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe, and Meryl Streep. Best Actor nominees include: Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman, and Jeremy Renner. The full list of nominees can be found at oscar.com. The 82nd Annual Academy Awards airs live, March 7 on ABC.

Broderick Headed to the Small Screen

Tony Award-winning actor Matthew Broderick has signed on to star in the pilot for an upcoming NBC comedy, “Beach Lane,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Broderick will reportedly play a famous author who is hired to help revive a struggling newspaper in the Hamptons. Broderick, who shot to fame after starring in the 1980s comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” has enjoyed years of success on Broadway, film, and most recently guest-starred on NBC’s “30-Rock.”

Etta James Hospitalized

R&B songstress Etta James was hospitalized in California last week with a blood infection, according to reports. The singer’s son, Donto James, has been acting as her spokesperson and revealed to Reuters this week that the 72-year-old star has also been contending with Alzheimer’s disease for some time. The legendary artist is most famous for her smash hit, “At Last,” and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Carrey, McGregor Knighted

Actors Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor have received a most prestigious honor from France, being named knights in the National Order of Arts and Letters. The two were in Paris to accept their honor while promoting their upcoming film, according to the Associate Press.
