Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were as surprised as everyone else when their daughter Jessa Duggar and her husband Ben Seewald decided to kiss for the first time in private, a wedding guest says.
Ashleigh, who writes the Christian blog “My Life As A Stay At Home Wife And Mom,” said that the events happened quickly as the minister announced the couple would have their first kiss–but then they went into a room by themselves.
The minister told the crowd that Ben and Jessa wanted to share their first kiss privately.
“Every head turned towards the Duggar parents who looked absolutely stunned by this display. Michelle was shaking her head,” the blogger said.
“My husband started to crack up, and I had to elbow him in the ribs. It was quite funny though. I wish you could have seen the looks on their faces. I don’t even remember what the minister preached on while the couple was gone, I think something about how the couple was doing the right thing by remaining pure until this day.”
The minister then asked the Duggar parents to kiss so that the crowd could see a Duggar kiss.
“Jim Bob and Michelle were still in shock, but they obliged and quickly pecked on the lips,” Ashleigh said.
After the wedding, the blogger says that she overheard Jim Bob talking to someone from TLC about altering the storyline to make it look like like Jim Bob and Michelle were in on it the whole time.
The first kiss is especially notable for the Duggar children because they’re not allowed to kiss before they’re married.
When the couple and the guests came together to share ice cream, several people told Ben and Jessa that they were proud of them for keeping their first kiss private.
Both Josh Duggar, the eldest child who married Anna several years ago, and Jill Duggar, who married Derick Dillard earlier this year, chose to have their first kiss in front of everyone.
Another guest, calling herself “Mary,” chipped in on the blog’s comments.
“I too was surprised by this kiss, but thought it was a beautiful choice. I must say I was a bit upset by Miss Michelle’s reaction and was disappointed when (I too) saw the headshaking,” she said.
“Jess made a beautiful choice, and to see her parents not support that was heartbreaking. My husband and I have prayed about it.”
