While it’s a new season, it already looks like the same story for the New York Jets—a dominating defense and an offense that can be a liability.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez—expected to take the leap forward following an up and down rookie year—led an anemic offense in the 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.

Despite the struggles, the second-year signal caller still had an opportunity to lead his team down the field for the game winning field goal.

Rather than looking like a quarterback in command of his offense, Sanchez looked frazzled and the rest of the offense didn’t look much better.

When Sanchez hit tight end Dustin Keller on the right sideline on a 4th-and-10 with just over half a minute remaining in the game, Keller stepped right out of bounds. Problem is, he was less than a yard shy of the first down marker, and had more than enough room to turn up field, gain the first down, then step out of bounds.

Sanchez led an offense that was only able to muster up five first downs and a single third down conversion, which only came on their final drive. At half, New York had 84 yards and 100 penalty yards.

Sanchez was 10 of 21 for only 74 yards. Instead of letting plays develop and making his reads down field, Sanchez was simply checking the ball down quickly.

As a rookie, Sanchez was bailed out by a strong run game. With the departure of leading rusher Thomas Jones and left guard Allan Faneca, the Jets run game posted 116 yards. Not quite up to par with the league’s leading rushing attack last season.

LaDainian Tomlinson did his part gaining 62 yards on 11 carries, but after a promising rookie season, Shonn Greene only had 5 carries for 18 yards. Greene struggled with ball security fumbling twice, losing one.

Fortunately the Jets defense picked up right where they left off last season.

New York held one of the leagues top rushing attacks from last season to just 49 yards. Quarterback Joe Flacco went 20 of 38 for 248 yards and an interception against the daunting Jets secondary.

And all that was mostly without nose tackle Kris Jenkins who suffered a left knee injury in the first quarter. He tore his ACL of that same knee against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6 of last season.
