The NFL will investigate an incident during the Miami Dolphins-New York Jets game on Sunday where a Dolphins return man was tripped by a member of the Jets coaching staff while he was running along the sideline, according to ESPN.
Miami’s Nolan Carroll was running out of bounds up the field during a special teams play in the third quarter when Jets strength coach Sal Alosi stuck his knee out and caused Carroll to sprawl on the ground in pain.
The trip was played on national television several times and CBS color commentator Dan Fouts said, “This is just uncalled for in the NFL … that has no place in any athletic event.”
The league and the Jets told ESPN that they are reviewing the incident.
Alosi said that he was responsible for the trip after the game and apologized to Dolphins coach Tony Sparano.
"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment," Alosi said, according to ESPN. "My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for.
According to Fox News, Alosi switched his green baseball cap to a black one after the incident, and then later took it off altogether.
"I just remember running and then next thing I know I'm on the ground, 'What happened?'" Carroll said, according to ESPN. "I remember I split the double-team and after that couldn't tell you what happened."
