Jermaine Green, a former pro football player, was shot by police on Wednesday after police arrived at a home and found him holding a woman at knifepoint.

Officers were called to the home in Daytona Beach, Florida after a reported disturbance, reported WFTV.

When they arrived, they found Green, 32, holding a knife to a woman.

Green refused to put the knife down, instead raising it as if he was going to stab the woman, Katrina Johnson.

Officers fired several shots and hit both Green and Johnson.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Michael Chitwood said there was no other option.

“I’m really proud of how the officers acted. One of the witnesses even said to me when I arrived on scene, ‘Chief, your officers had no choice. She was dead if they didn’t know what they had to do,” said Chitwood.

Green, who played for the New York Giants in 2004, had surgery after being shot and is expected to survive.
