Jeremy Meeks, the “handsome felon” whose mugshot went viral a few weeks ago, wasn’t shot and killed by his wife.
A fake report posted on Huzlers.com, which describes itself as “satire,” said that he died, tricking hundreds of thousands of people over the past few days. According to a disclaimer, “Huzlers.com is a combination of real shocking news and satire news to keep its visitors in a state of disbelief.”
But the latest (real) news stories say Meeks, 30, is still in jail awaiting a court date. He was arrested as part of a gang sweep in Stockton, Calif., last month.
When his mugshot was taken and posted online, it went viral across social media sites. The photo was used to generate Internet memes, and he has reportedly attempted to cash in on its popularity.
Meeks hired publicist Gina Rodriguez, and according to Hollywood Life, they want to organize a reality TV show around his life.
“Our plan is to brand Jeremy as a high-fashion model and to get him a reality-TV show to follow his foray into modeling,” Rodriguez was quoted as saying.
However, the development might prove fruitless as Meeks is facing federal gun charges. “That one charge could lead to a prison term of 10 years and a fine of $250,000. San Joaquin County District Attorney spokesman Robert Himelblau said federal gun charges lead to longer prison sentences,” says Sacramento-based KXTV.
He faces the charge of felon of possession of a firearm.
Meeks told reporters that he’s not a drug dealer or involved in crime, as some reports have said;.
“Well, I appreciate the attention. But I just want them to know that this is really not me; I’m not some kingpin,” he said.
