Family and friends are mourning the loss of 16-year-old Jasmine Poole, who was killed after a car flipped in Henry County, GA, on Wednesday night, May 7, 2014. Two other teens who were in the car with Poole are in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.
“It is absolutely horrible. (Jasmine) just turned 16. She was the sweetest little girl you ever want to meet; she was a cheerleader," said family friend Tiffany Berrien in an interview with WSB TV.
The two other teens include a male senior and another female sophomore. All three teens went to Dutchtown High School. Police found out that the car ran off the road and into a ditch where it overturned. Some witnesses on the scene said that the teens were probably involved in a race.
Henry County police Sgt. Joey Smith attributed speed as a factor in the crash. “Preliminary investigation indicates that speed and reckless driving contributed to the accident and the lack of safety restraints on any of the occupants,” Smith said, according to the Henry Herald. According to WSB TV, the male was driving the car.
Winston Odom, 18, a senior at the school, said he knew the male driver, whom he referred to as DQ Green. “We go back to elementary school,” Odom told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “To see [DQ Green] in the hospital like that was kind of hard, especially when graduation is dear,” Odom said.
Odom said Green is doing better, although still on life support.
When asked about the racing that the students are suspected for, he said he didn’t know about it. “That part of the road is usually where students speed up because it’s open always,” Odom said.
There will be a candle vigil at 8 p.m. at the Dutchtown High School football stadium for Poole on Thursday night.
