Defeated opposition presidential candidate, Sarath Fonseka, has appealed to the country’s highest court to overturn the results of last month’s election, reported AP.

Fonseka political rival and former close ally, Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa, ordered his arrest shortly after the disputed elections.

Tensions in Sri Lanka over the arrest have increased with thousands of opposition supporters taking to the streets to protest Fonseka’s arrest on Tuesday. It is not clear yet whether the court will hear the case.

The election campaign, in which both rivals claimed responsibility for the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels last year, was marked by violence killing supporters on both sides.
