Celebrating and supporting women during Women’s History Month, the United Nations announced on March 1 that Ivanka Trump, business woman and daughter of Donald Trump, will be the spokeswoman for the international program “Girl Up.”

The purpose of the “Girl Up” program is to bring public attention to the disparities between opportunities for adolescent girls in different regions around the world, and to provide U.S. girls, as well as their families and friends, chances to help girls in other countries lead healthier, safer lives, the U.N. Foundation said in a press release.

As a woman who has a successful business career, married the man of her choice, and is able to decide whether she has children or not, Trump walks the path she would like to see all girls have open to them.

Reports from the United Nations Web site tell of the spread of diseases, the uncontrolled pregnancies, the poverty, and the lack of hope for the future that many girls face, as well as having a limited education and being forced into an arranged marriage by the age of 15.

“Ivanka is a natural role model to young women worldwide,” said Kathy Bushkin Calvin, chief executive officer of the U.N. Foundation. “Working together, we can give girls in developing countries a chance to live up to their potential as the bright, talented girls that they are and set them on the path of becoming the strong, independent, and healthy women of tomorrow.”

Along with the announcement, Trump launched her 2010 Fine Jewelry Collection at Trump Park Avenue in New York City. Her press release said that the penthouse was decorated in the jewel-box style of her Madison Avenue boutique, and guests included Nigel Barker, Andre Leon Talley, Wendi Murdoch, Patricia Field, Robert Verdi, and Jill Zarin, as well as her family, friends, and jewelry industry leaders.

The jewelry has an heirloom-chic style to it and is made from platinum and 18K white, yellow, and rose gold, featuring diamonds, onyx, black spinel, agate, pearls, and rock crystal. The designs will be sold through top U.S. and international retailers.

Women’s History Month was established in 1987 by the U.S. Congress, expanding Women’s History Week begun in 1982, which was based on the International Women’s Day, March 8, declared in Europe in 1911.

Each year the U.S. president issues a proclamation in support of the Month, stating, according to the White House Web site, “Women’s History Month is an opportunity for us to recognize the contributions women have made to our Nation, and to honor those who blazed trails for women’s empowerment and equality.”
