Cecilia Peters (L) returns for a second time to see the beauty of Shen Yun

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Cecilia Peters, a literature and English teacher, returned for a second time to see Shen Yun, bringing three of her friends along to see the Saturday matinee performance at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

“This is my present to my friends,” said Ms. Peters, who shared that she wanted to treat her friends to the beauty of the performance. “It’s just a culture I’ve always liked, and this shows it off the best. … They display it beautifully for others to understand and see.”

When speaking of the performers, Ms. Peters said: “They are just so incredibly elegant, especially the women. ... It’s just amazing. It’s just beautiful!”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Featuring a collection of story-based dance dramas, the performance aims to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

Gerri Emmets, an administrative assistant and friend of Ms. Peters, felt the performance showcased Chinese culture through dance and incredible stories. “Each one that they did was beautiful. I kept thinking I like this one the best—and then another one would come along!”

Classical Chinese dance has been passed down through the imperial courts, and ancient Chinese theater and opera. Over thousands of years, it was organized and refined to incorporate a wide array of movements and techniques, allowing the artists to express the personalities of a wide range of characters.

New York-based Shen Yun tours internationally with an all-new lineup each year, bringing its revival of China’s authentic traditional culture to the Broward Center’s Au-Rene Theatre, with four performances Jan. 11–13.

This year, for the first time, the Florida tour will include Ft. Myers (April 23–24), West Palm Beach (April 29–30), and Melbourne (May 2).
