An Italian husband sued his wife, who could faces up to six years in jail, for “bad management of housework,” according to reports.
A court in Sonnino, Italy, decided to prosecute the wife, who was not named, after the man filed a complaint, RT reported. The 40-year-old woman had been “insulting” her 47-year-old husband by not cleaning or cooking enough.
He said food routinely ended up in the garbage instead of being cooked for the family.
Furthermore, the man alleged his wife forced him to “live in conditions with poor hygiene.” Reports also said that his wife sometimes kicked him out of bed at night.
The Telegraph reported that the man made a formal complaint to the paramilitary Carabinieri police. They didn’t dismiss it and referred it to local judicial authorities. They ended up sending the woman to trial, where she could face two to six years for the charge of “mistreatment within the family.”
The crime “punishes whoever mistreats a person in their family or a person entrusted to them for reasons of education, care or custody,” the Telegraph reported.
The trial will start on Oct. 12, Italy’s The Local reported.
According to the Guardian, Italian campaigners called for women who worked in the home to be paid a salary. The proposal was not widely supported. At the time, Daniela Del Boca, an economics professor at the University of Turin, told the paper a salary would serve as a “disincentive to look for a job.”
