WASHINGTON—The traditions of an ancient civilization came alive in dance and music at the Kennedy Center Thursday night Jan. 31. Shen Yun performed tales from history and brought the character of different dynasties to the stage.

Mr. Shamik Bose, who lives in India, attended Thursday’s performance of Shen Yun at the Kennedy Center Opera House. An information technology architect and consultant with Cognizant Technology Solutions, Mr. Bose appreciated seeing the ancient and classical culture of China.

“This is an excellent show, this is an eye-opener and heart-feeling show… it actually soothes and pacifies the heart and mind,” said Mr. Bose.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization by bringing the culture to life through traditional dance and music. Shen Yun performances feature themes of compassion and courage with the goal of uplifting and inspiring audiences.

Mr. Bose appreciated the presentation of dance and music passed down from ancient times.

Classical Chinese dance has come down through the people, the dynastic courts, and through ancient plays. Through thousands of years of refining it has become a extensive and distinctly Chinese form of dance, says Shen Yun Performing Arts’ website.

From the perspective of his Indian heritage with its ancient and classical dance and music, Mr. Bose recognized and appreciated the wisdom of the culture being expressed through the dance and its choreography, through the orchestra, and its musical composition.

According to Shen Yun’s website, this power of expression is a feature of Chinese dance: “China’s deep cultural traditions are contained in classical Chinese dance, allowing its movements to be richly expressive, such that the personalities and feelings of characters can be portrayed with unparalleled clarity.”

“This has been an excellent, excellent show. It has really made my heart really warm and fulfilled,” said Mr. Bose.
