Facebook is losing popularity among teens and many of the social network’s veteran users are turned off by its intrusive ads and less-than ideal user interface. However, no competitor even comes near to the juggernaut’s reach and activity.

Will a faster, leaner start-up take its place or, just like fossil fuels, it will become the QWERTY problem of our existence — unbearable, but irreplaceable?
