“Iron Man” 3 $1 billion: The third installment in the “Iron Man” franchise will have raked in more than $1 billion in box office sales as of either May 16 or May 17, if it hasn’t already surpassed the milestone.

Iron Man 3“ had garnered $962.2 million worldwide as of May 14, according to Walt Disney Studios.

It’s only the 16th film ever to gross over $1 billion, according to the Los Angeles Times. The first two “Iron Man” films got $623 million and $585 million respectively.

This third installment has done especially well internationally, getting more than $672 million overseas. Asian audiences are particularly enjoying it.

With the ticket sales, “Iron Man 3” becomes the second highest grossing superhero film of all time at the international box office.

The newest “Star Trek” film opening this weekend may hinder further growth, but probably not by too much.
