Iranian navy warships are planning to make their transit through Egypt’s Suez Canal on Tuesday, multiple media reports said.

Two warships plan to make the journey on Tuesday at a cost of nearly $300,000, The Associated Press reported citing unnamed canal officials.

The trip would be the first time in three decades that Iran has sent military ships through the waterway that connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

Israel, which views Iran as a staunch enemy, considers the ships’ journey as a hostile provocation, but Tehran maintains that the warships are traveling to Syria for a training mission.

The warships will make a trip through the Suez Canal that is “routine according to international law” and will anchor in Syria “for a few days,” according to Bloomberg News citing Ahmad Mousavi, Iran’s ambassador to Syria.

One ship going through the Suez Canal is a frigate warship, while the other is a supply vessel, AP said.
