Iran released three Belgians held in jail since October on charges of “illegal entry and collecting information,” Iranian media reported on Wednesday Dec. 9.

Reports didn’t specify what kind of banned zone the men allegedly entered or where it is located.

Three Belgians named Fan Din Boch, Vincent Ben Fleur, and Diego Gumathieu were released by the order of Tehran prosecutor and handed over to the Belgium Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday.

Belgian foreign ministry made no official statement on the incident.

Five British yachtsmen were detained in Iran on Nov. 25 after they mistakenly drifted into Iranian waters in the Gulf while racing from Bahrain to Dubai. They were released after a week of interrogations by the authorities.

Iran still holds three young American hikers who accidentally entered the country through the poorly marked border in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq.

Joshua Fattal, Shane Bauer, and Sarah Shourd have been detained since July 31. Despite repeated appeals to Iranian leaders from their families, organized through the Web site freethehikers.org, the three are still in custody after more than four months.
