Verizon Wireless may have just begun preorders of their version of the popular Apple iPhone, but already reviews from tech and news websites have begun to heap praise on the “new” mobile device.
Widely regarded as the wireless provider with a better network, Verizon Wireless is betting on that reputation to pull in new customers and pry them away from competitor AT&T.
In recent reviews, journalists have been very clear about one thing: the Verizon iPhone performs better than the AT&T iPhone.
“After a few days of testing, we can report that Verizon’s network offers discernable improvements over AT&T’s. The data speeds were faster most of the time, we had more success with placing calls in problem areas, and the calls connected faster,” the CNET.com review read.
CNET measured download/upload speeds in the San Francisco Bay Area and out of the twelve performance tests, Verizon won 10 and AT&T just two.
Other reviews echoed CNET’s claims.
“The Verizon model did much, much better with voice calls,” The Wall Street Journal’s Walter Mossberg wrote on Thursday. “Calls on the Verizon unit were mostly crisp and clear, including speakerphone calls and those made over my car’s Bluetooth connection.”
The New York Times’ David Pogue wrote in his review of the device that “the Verizon iPhone is nearly the same as AT&T’s iPhone 4—but it doesn’t drop calls. For several million Americans, that makes it the holy grail.”
However, before you rush out the door or to your computer to preorder the iPhone on Verizon, heed this word of warning: the differences between the Verizon iPhone and the AT&T iPhone won’t be “life-changing,” CNET said.
“So while it is better in some regards, it can’t beat AT&T on all fronts,” the website noted, such as the Verizon iPhone’s inability to use data while on a call or its lack of 4G.
Verizon announced on Thursday that due to more users eating up bandwidth on their networks, the company might throttle the data speeds of 5 percent of its users who use the most data for the time being.
Pre-ordering for the iPhone started at 3 a.m. on Thursday morning. The Verizon phone will go on sale online next Wednesday and will make its first appearance in stores next Thursday.
