Dozens of unidentified armed men attacked a U.N. peacekeeping base in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday, killing three Indian peacekeepers.

“At about 1:50 a.m., under the cover of darkness, the unit’s company operating base at Kirumba was approached by five innocent looking civilians,” the Indian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

Then about 60 men, probably from the MAYI rebel group, armed with machetes and spears attacked the U.N. base by surprise, according to the statement.

The attack lasted approximately five minutes, and then the rebels slipped into the forest with several stolen weapons from the peacekeepers.

The U.N. has condemned the assault and called on the Congolese government to launch an immediate investigation into the incident to ensure that the attackers are punished.
