After two days of battle, the Indian navy Sunday night captured 61 pirates. The pirates had jumped into the Arabian Sea about 600 nautical miles off the Indian coast, in an attempt to escape their ship, which was set aflame by Indian gunfire, according to reports.

The ship, the Vega 5, was captured by the pirates in December and was used as a mother ship to launch attacks on merchant vessels.

The nationality of the pirates is being investigated and they will be held in Mumbai before their trials there, AP reported.

The navy also freed 13 crew members held hostage on the Vega 5, and recovered a number of rifles and rocket propelled grenades from the ship, according to the Hindustan Times.

Also on Monday, the crew of a Bangladeshi ship was released by pirates after its owner paid $4 million ransom, reported the BBC.
