Indian Ministers Seek More Aid for Bhopal Victims
Government ministers in India have called for more relief for victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, according to the Times of India.

The call comes after light sentences and fines were given earlier this month to eight Indian nationals responsible for the tragedy. These are the first sentences handed out and Union Carbide’s American chairman, Warren Anderson, was not sentenced.

The ministers will also press the U.S. to extradite Anderson, according to The Independent.

Company negligence led to a poisonous gas leak from a pesticide plant in Bhopal that immediately killed between 7,000 and 10,000 people, according to the Amnesty figures.

Many victims never received compensation and untold numbers continued to suffer from injuries due to leak and from pollution emitted by the plant into the surrounding water system.
