India Q&A: “Are You Satisfied With Waste-Management in Your City? ”

Lijo Jose, Architect, Thrissur: ‘NO’ is what comes to my mind the moment I hear this question. But considering the fact that I haven’t done my part in keeping my city clean makes me rethink. Anyone in city could do their part by processing most waste by household methods but we choose not to, mostly due to lack of awareness , attitude or even time. If waste management is practices at household level it becomes easier for any city to run their part easily and efficiently. Speaking of Thrissur there has been definitely a lack of good governance in this area. However, after the major shock we all had seeing the alarming quantities of waste piled up around the city recently, looks like the authorities have all woken up from their slumber. Waste-management is the one of the severest problems plaguing Indian cities today.

According to a report in India Together, about 0.1 million tonnes of municipal solid waste is generated in India every day. That is approximately 36.5 million tonnes annually. Out of the total municipal waste collected, on an average 94% is dumped on land and 5% is composted.
