Texas Lt. Gov. David Drewhurst has called for Republicans to launch a campaign to impeach President Barack Obama amid rumors that impeachment hearings were scheduled by GOP Congressional members.

Drewhurst, a Republican, said that Obama’s handling of the deadly attack on the Benghazi consulate in 2012 and the Affordable Health Care Act law are grounds for impeachment.

He made the comments at the Tarrant County Tea Party forum, according to the Texas Observer.

“This election is about protecting you and your freedoms, which are given to you by God, but which are being trampled on by Barack Obama right now. I don’t know about you, but Barack Obama ought to be impeached,” he said, which drew applause. “Not only for trampling on our liberties, but what he did in Benghazi is just a crime.”

He added: “I think this president, Barack Obama, has disregarded federal law. He’s tried to do things which are not authorized under federal law, such as with immigration, such as not following our federal drug laws,” according to the Observer. “He’s created winners and losers out of Obamacare where he has no authority, such as allowing for the unions and big businesses to postpone their mandates for a year.”

A number of Texas Republicans have publicly called for the impeachment of Obama. U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess in 2011 said he would support a move. And U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, also of Texas, said he believes the House has enough votes to impeach the president but he believed it wasn’t a sound strategy to pursue.

“If we were to impeach the president tomorrow, we would probably get the votes in the House of Representatives to do it,” Farenthold said, according to Politico.

Last week, Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed that the House could impeach Obama.

She said the president has “committed impeachable offenses.”

“We can have an impeachment hearing in the House, and in my mind the president has committed impeachable offenses,” Bachmann said, according to The Hill.

“Impeachment is important that we have that tool — it’s very important — but it’s also disruptive and harmful to the nation and it’s to be used sparingly,” she added.
