Ikea announced that it will be recalling almond cakes found to contain high levels of coliform bacteria, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The cakes will be recalled from stores in 23 countries. The too high bacterial levels were detected after Chinese authorities seized a batch of the cakes at customs in Dec. 2012.
The recall announcement comes just one week after the horse meat scandal that stopped the sale of Ikea meatballs in 21 countries.
“Coliform bacteria are organisms that are present in the environment and in the feces of all warm-blooded animals and humans,” according to the State Department of Health. “Coliform bacteria will not likely cause illness”
The levels of Coliform found in the almond cakes was higher than acceptable according to the the Shanghai quarantine bureau that did the testing.
Along with the Ikea Cakes, Kraft Cream cheese and Nestle chocolate bars we also seized for other violations according to the associated press.
