Dear Editor,

I really enjoyed the article: “The Beauty and Personality of Handwriting” on page B4 of your July 22-28 edition where you talk about master penman Michael Sull and his work. What really caught my eye in the article was that some English teachers don’t even teach cursive script anymore.

I have been an English teacher at the high school and college level for almost forty years and as computers became more popular, at least one journal on education began a debate on whether it was still necessary to teach handwriting to the students. That argument has about as much validity as for a math teacher to stop teaching math skills since everyone nowadays has a calculator.

People still need to sign different documents, write “thank you” notes, etc. where knowledge of the cursive script is imperative. Every skill we have has its place and makes us a better person.
