Hyundai is recalling more than 220,000 Sonata sedans and Santa Fe SUVs due to potential air bag problems, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said over the weekend.

The recall affects Santa Fe models between 2007 and 2009 and Sonata models between 2012 and 2013, the agency said.

“The curtain side airbags on these vehicles may inflate without deployment command due to an error during manufacturing,” it said.

The problem might “increase the risk of injury to occupants of the vehicle” and “an unexpected deployment would be a significant driver distraction and would limit the driver’s visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.”

In all, 199,118 Santa Fe models are affected by the problem, reported The Wall Street Journal. Hyundai said the problem also affects 22,512 Sonata models.

The traffic safety agency said Hyundai will notify the owners of the vehicles and will replace side air bags free of charge, adding that the recall will begin sometime in August.
