Hurricane Maria formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday afternoon, according to a 5 p.m. ET update from the National Hurricane Center on Sept. 17.

Maria comes less than two weeks after Hurricane Irma wrecked much of the Caribbean before making landfall in Cuba, Florida, and other parts of the southeastern United States, killing more than 70 people.

Maria is a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph. It’s now 140 miles east-northeast of Barbados, and moving at 15 mph to the west-northwest.

The NHC said that several hurricane watches and warnings are now in effect.

Barbuda and Antigua were both slammed by Irma earlier this month. The prime minister of the country remarked that “95 percent” of the buildings on Barbuda were destroyed by the storm.

The British Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, and St. Martin/St. Maarten are under hurricane watches. Those islands were also impacted by Irma.
