More than 1,000 kittens were let into the wild by local authorities in Jiangsu Province, after they were confiscated from a meat supplier.

Police and animal activists stopped the driver of a truck full of cats in wooden crates that were due to be eaten at restaurants, because he did not possess the necessary paperwork. Local officials then released the young cats into a forest nearby due to a lack of funds available for euthanizing them.

“They were being sent to Guangzhou to be eaten by people,” an activist surnamed Ni told AFP. “We didn’t want to release them, our volunteers had places to keep them. It’s definitely irresponsible.”

“Some of the cats are hungry, and haven’t eaten, while others have been run over by cars,” he added.

Volunteers have been searching the area to try and retrieve the cats. So far over 50 have been found, and are being put up for adoption.
