A group of students in France has founded a group called the Hummus Initiative in hopes that the popular dish can help bring peace in Israel and Palestine.  A couple of weeks ago, they began asking people to take pictures of themselves, next to a bowl of chickpea favorite and post it on social media with the hashtag hummus selfie.

In their manifesto they write, “Through our selfies, we seek to counterweight the countless hate messages currently invading the social space. We want to create a space of understanding where a peaceful dialogue can take place.” A collective of British Jews had began a similar campaign bearing the name and a tag “chickpeace” to promotes a similar objective. Using one means or another, and sometimes a lot of people have joined in the effort. Many have included messages sharing their hopes that the conflict that has claimed nearly 2000 lives comes to a quick end, given the thousands of likes and tweets the two groups have inspired seems like the goal to fill the internet with peaceful communication is well under way.
