A 62 foot Jesus statue, located by I-75 north of Cincinnati, was hit by lightning late Monday night. After being struck by lightning the massive Jesus statue nicknamed “touchdown Jesus” caught fire and collapsed next to the nearby roadway.

The statue was reported hit by lightning at 11:15 pm. After being struck by lightning the massive Jesus sculpture caught fire and later fell to the ground into a smoldering pile of rubble with the face of the religious figure head still visible. The statue was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus due to position held by Jesus in the sculpture.

The statue was placed in front of the Solid Rock Church in 2004 and has been a local landmark since it was first erected. No one was injured from the fire or the statue’s collapse.

The statue attracted so many visitors in the past that a path was built to help those who wanted to pray to the giant Jesus statue. The Solid Rock Church was started by Lawrence Bishop who built the statue with the simple wish of wanting to help people. At least a quarter million dollars was spent to manufacture, erect, and maintain the statue.
