At the request of German authorities, officials in Russia have searched a Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) office in Moscow as part of a new bribery investigation against the company.

The Wall Street Journal broke the news, citing unnamed sources, that the probe is regarding HP allegedly paying millions of dollars in bribes to win a Russian contract to sell computer hardware valued at 35 million euros (US$48 million). HP allegedly paid almost $11 million in bribes to win the contract.

“This is an investigation of alleged conduct that occurred almost seven years ago, largely by employees no longer with HP,” said the Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer giant. HP is currently the world’s No. 1 computer maker.
