A horse found dead in Oklahoma is believed to have been dragged to death, officials said.

Police in Shawnee were called around 5 a.m. on Sunday by someone who spotted the horse being dragged.

“The officers went out there and seen that there was a bunch of blood and drag marks,” Cpl. Vivian Lozano with the Shawnee Police Department told KFOR.

The trail of blood led about five miles to the town of Dale, where officers found a dead horse.

Lozano said the horse appeared to be dragged the whole way.

“That’s what it looks like,“ Lozano said. ”It’s still under investigation. We don’t have very many details on it. But, yes, unfortunately.”

Police officers are asking any area residents who have information to contact them.

Lozano noted that it may have been animal abuse, or it may have been an accident.

He said if it was intentional, charges will be filed. A Facebook user said that it could have been intentional.

“This is why you should always check your trailer floors! More than likely the horse fell through the trailer floor. Can’t haul a 1500 pound horse on rotten wood. Poor, sweet animal,” wrote Keely Merriman.

“It could have been on accident [sic] without the owner knowing it fell through or out of the trailer... Just a thought... or someone is crazy and evil. But I would think someone would sell it before doing this. Even if it’s a lame horse people sell them to people that make dog food for a few hundred bucks. Hopefully, this was a tragic accident,” another user added.

“How could you drag a horse that fell off a trailer without noticing? I feel every bump and adjustment my horses make. I'd like to hear more of this story. Someone has to know the farm it was left in front of,” added another user.

One case of someone dragging a horse in the same state back in 2011 led to an arrest.

The man was charged with cruelty to animals and other charges after the horse had to be euthanized due to the severity of the injuries.

The man later pleaded not guilty, though it’s not clear what happened after that.
