NEW YORK—Fans of the Great American Pastime gathered at Foley’s Irish Pub on West 33rd St. Tuesday to honor the induction of their favorite Irish American baseball personalities to the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame.

Among the inductees, not all of whom were present, were Brooklyn and LA Dodgers owner Walter O’ Malley, baseball All Stars Steve Garvey and Paul O’Neill, seasoned umpire Jim Joyce, longtime sportscaster Vin Scully and Ed Lucas, a blind reporter who covered the Yankees and the Mets for more than 40 years.

Honorees are chosen based on a combination of factors such as impact on the game, popularity, contributions to the community, and of course, ancestry.

Among the inductees was former LA Dodger Steve Garvey, who accepted his plaque with gratitude. “Oh it’s a great honor. Really it’s the beginnings of this wonderful hall of fame second induction class, and to go in with Walter O’ Malley, Vin Scully and myself as Dodgers, so to speak, is quite an honor, and to have Irish roots and been blessed to play the game and to be honored today by the Irish hall of fame is a grand slam for me.”

The event also marked the induction of longtime Dodgers owner Walter O’ Malley, being honored in New York City since having moved the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles more than 50 years ago. Peter O’ Malley attended the induction to accept the plaque for his father’s accomplishments.
