Holiday wreaths in the tens of thousands headed down the East Coast in a caravan of tractor-trailers ahead of the holiday season, according to an Associated Press this week.

The wreaths start in Maine and are heading toward Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C., the AP report said.

In total, 24,000 wreaths will be placed atop soldiers’ headstones next weekend to pay tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes.

According to Wreaths Across America, which sponsors the event, the event started in 1992 after the Wreath Company noticed that they had excess amounts of wreaths toward the end of the Christmas season.

The ceremony is a part of numerous other wreath-laying ceremonies across the US. The organization said that all 50 states and Puerto Rico hold a ceremony at a cemetery.

In 2008, more than “100,000 wreaths were placed on veterans graves” and “over 60,000 volunteers participated,” Wreaths Across America stated on their website.
