The designer: Evelyn Eshun
The goal: Create a sparkly and glamorous dining room with the use of colour, traditional elements, and a touch of whimsy.
The look created: The walls of the room were painted in General Paint’s Wavelength and I had my contractor install millwork on the walls to add dimension and create space to hang stunning yellow and grey wallpaper from Crown Wallcoverings.
To furnish the room, I started with beautiful, two-toned French country-inspired furniture and peacock prints from Bassett Furniture. The next element was the Tibetan wool area rug from W Studio which had the perfect blend of colours and shapes to complement the prints. At this point, I decided to continue with an analogous colour scheme (one side of the colour wheel).
I chose accessories from Home Sense in turquoise, greens and yellows with a bit of silver and grey to add a touch of cool modernity to the room.
The overall look of this space is traditional; however the judicious exclusion of red makes this space contemporary in its expression.
Evelyn’s decorating tips:
Choose a colour scheme: There should be a “jumping off point” that acts as your inspiration for your colour scheme. If you determine your colour inspiration from the beginning, it will make the decisions of what to include in the space easier. For this dining room project, the choice of colours ranged from apple green to gold, to rich turquoise, inspired by a pair of Peacock canvases I found at Bassett Furniture.
Add a little whimsy: Small, whimsical touches placed randomly around the house or on the tablescape is a great way to put a smile on people’s faces. I picked an inexpensive, skinny, sparkling reindeer to add a touch of whimsy on the dining table.
Fill empty wall space with oversized ornaments: I decided to hang oversized acrylic snowflakes on the wall using invisible fishing wire. The snowflakes add a decorative touch to the empty wall space.
Mix metallics for a touch of glamour: When picking pieces for the tablescape, I chose a random blend of gold and silver items to provide glamour. The blending of these metals gives you the best of both worlds—cool and sophisticated silver paired with a warm and luxurious gold.
