The Hong Kong Football Association championship competition’s standing leaders remained unchanged last weekend due to only one game being completed. Meanwhile, HKFC Wanderers played out a draw to retain top spot in the Division One Yau Yee League.
HKFA Championship
I Sky Yuen Long defeated Tuen Mun 1-nil through a late winner scored by Ferriera in the only First Division match in the HKFA League on Sunday afternoon (Oct 13).
This leaves Kitchee leading Sun Pegasus by one point having played one more game and South China a further point behind having played two more games than Sun Pegasus.
A full round in the Hong Kong Football Association Second Division saw: HKFC beat Tuen Mun 7-nil, with four goals in a dominant first half; Kwun Tong beat Wanchai 1-nil; Wong Tai Sin beat Lucky Mile 2-nil, with Lucky Mile conceding a penalty and having a man sent off in the process; Shatin drew 1-all with Woofoo Tai Po; Tai Chung beat Wing Yee 3-1; and Double Flower drew 1-all with Kwai Tsing.
In the Second Division standings, with four rounds played, Wong Tai Sin and Woo Foo Tai Po are joint leaders on 10 points, closely followed by HKFC and Kwun Tong on 9.
In the Third Division there were a few large wins, but the major action centred on the game between the two teams with 100 per cent records from prior rounds between Yau Tsim Mong and Metro Gallery Sun Source. After a 3-1 win, Yau Tsim Mong now lead the standings on 15 points, with their 100 per cent winning record in tact. Metro Gallery Sun Source are on 12 points.
In the Fourth Division, Ornament lead the standings in the early stages with a 100 per cent record and 9 points from the first three rounds of matches.
Yau Yee League
In mid-week Yau Yee League Division One games at Kings Park: Baker Tilly Spartans defeated The Store House Squadron 1-nil; while GAS lost 1-2 to KCC Dragons.
In the weekend’s games HKFC Wanderers played out a nil-all draw with Baker Tilly Spartans at Sports Road in a game with plenty of endeavour, but little goal mouth action. Neither goalkeeper was forced to make anything other than routine saves.
An early Wanderers corner from the left from Simon Galvin required the full back on the near post to head the ball off of the line.
A fast break from defence by Spartans led to the centre forward tamely hitting the ball into the goalkeepers arms with a free shot from around the penalty spot, which was unchallenged.
In the 30th minute a Spartans player hit the corner of the right hand side post and crossbar, but the rebound was easily cleared.
The Wanderers saw a header from a corner bounce off of the crossbar and over for a goal kick minutes before half-time.
The second half was almost the same as the first, with the Wanderers’ patient build up being countered by a more direct attacking approach from Spartans. This achieved little in terms of goal threat for either side and the draw was probably a fair reflection of the game.
The following game between HKFC Albion and Swiss XI started at a quick tempo with both teams trying to get the early initiative.
After 8 minutes, a 30 yard shot from the Swiss captain brought out a tip over the bar from Albions’ goalkeeper Jamie Devonshire.
On 10 minutes, a quick passing move from Albion led to Taw dribbling past three Swiss defenders before rifling a shot from the edge of the box past the diving goalkeeper and into the left-hand corner of the Swiss net.
Although both sides kept attempting to attack, nothing resulted to trouble either goalkeeper before Albion went into the half-time break with a one goal lead.
Swiss came out with a good deal of determination after the break and 6 minutes into the second half the equaliser came.
Their forward ran into the right-hand side of the box and fired across Devonshire into Albion’s right-hand corner of the net. Although Albion threatened a few attacks, the second half was dominated by Swiss attacks and stalwart defence from Albion, which saw a number of good saves from Devonshire. The game finished in a 1-all draw.
Meanwhile, HKFC Colts won 2-0 against The Store House Squadron with goals in each half; GAS scored a 5-0 defeat of Interglobo Colloids; and Antonhill defeated French Kiss 2-1.
Wanderers lead USRC and GAS by two points at the top of the standings having played two games more than USRC, followed by Swiss a further point behind.
The remainder of the Yau Yee League was unchanged due to the teams from the other divisions all competing in the first knock out round of the Cup.
