Hong Kong’s Legislative Council election will be held in September. On June 19, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy camp expressed concerns about being disqualified.
On June 22, the Nikkei Asian Review—a Japanese news media company, reported that a member of the Chinese Communist Party Standing Committee, Tam Yiu-Chung, revealed that all elected candidates must support the Hong Kong National Security Law, or else they may be disqualified. Members of Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan criticized the CCP for violating and changing their agreements with the people of Hong Kong.
Secretary-general of the pro-democracy party Demosistō, Joshua Wong: “It’s not just me that faces the problem of being disqualified, the entire election is at risk of being disqualified with the National Security Law’s legislation.”
On June 19, Joshua Wong said that the Legislative Council could be disqualified as a result of the re-election in September. According to a report from Nikkei Asian Review, Tam Yiu-Chung, a member of the Standing Committee of the CCP’s National People’s Congress (NPC) and a representative of Hong Kong, has openly threatened the people of Hong Kong saying that all candidates must sign a pledge of allegiance to the Hong Kong Basic Law, which includes Hong Kong’s National Security Law—or else they may be disqualified.
