Intrepid YouTube user DaveHax recently did a tutorial on how to make a spare emergency key using a lighter, tape, and a food can lid.
He says:
This tutorial shows you how to make a print of an original padlock key, and transfer it onto the lid of a food can. You can then cut out your own DIY spare key and use it to unlock your padlock. You might want to use pliers and safety gloves to do this project, and please be careful not to cut yourself.

In all, one needs:

- Clear tape - Lighter - The lid of a tin can - Sharp scissors - Work gloves - And the key you want to duplicate.

He burns the key, places the burned key against the tape so as to “stain” the tape, and then places the tape on a tin can lid. Then, he cuts around the outline and forms a duplicate key. Then, he tests out the key on a padlock and it opens.
