Heath Miller suffered a concussion after this hit.A Heath Miller hit by the Ravens’ Jameel McClain in Sunday night’s game should have drawn a flag, an NFL official said after the play.
Carl Johnson, head of NFL officiating, told NBC’s broadcast that the helmet-to-helmet hit should have resulted in a penalty against McClain and the Ravens, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.
Late in the third quarter, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Heath Miller had a pass from Ben Roethlisberger deflected away, and was going to the ground, when he was hit by McClain, snapping Miller’s head and neck backwards. Miller stayed on the field for several minutes before leaving the game with a concussion, the Tribune-Review reported.
NBC commentators calling the smashmouth AFC North matchup expressed their outrage that there was no penalty call.
The fact that there was no flag was “unbelievable,” NBC color commentator Cris Collinsworth said. “That is the very definition of what I’ve been told [is] a defenseless player.”
The game, won by the Steelers by a score of 13-10, also saw Steelers QB Roethlisberger have his nose broken after a sack by the Ravens’ Haloti Ngata. Roethlisberger will need surgery to fix his crooked nose.
